[ I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HOW YOU PLAY HACKETT. ]
[-sighs and pulls out notebook- Alrighty then, Miss. Can I ask you what the nature of your problem is?]
“Shepard, I know that some days are going to be hard, that’s life after all. But as long as you pick yourself off and keep moving you’ll be fine.”
Send “Can’t sleep” for a thought that might run through my muse’s head about yours at 3 in the morning.
“Mags deserves every happiness… I just hope I get to be there to see her be happy.”

Another smile, and she leaned up to wrap her arms around his neck, hugging him,
“Thank you,” she whispered, tears of joy in her eyes. After so many years, and so many battles and so many tears and lost friends, she was finally happy. Maggie had Garrus, she had her mother and the Admiral, her cre— .. no, her family. They were family, and she loved each of them.
Straightening, her hands rested on the Admiral’s chest and she offered him another smile, before she felt a touch at her elbow. Turning her eyes toward the Turian whose mandibles twitched with a smile, and she hooked her arm through his. One more glance at Hackett, almost as if she were a child confirming that she was leaving her father’s care for the last time, before she went with Garrus to the skylimo waiting for them.
Shepard settled into the limo against Garrus’ side, his arm around her shoulders, and she looked out the window again. Everyone was in their best clothes, the Quarians in white versions of their suits. Wrex cheered her on, as did Grunt, and at the forefront was Hackett..
Her father.
Hackett pulled Maggie in close, his eyes sliding shut as he squeezed her frame against his. For so long he and Anderson had looked out for her, and now he was passing her along to someone else. The pang of loneliness in his heart was hard to deny.
She pulled away and he let her go, his hands falling away from her with little resistance. He offered her the brightest smile he could manage, and reached up to brush a stray lock of hair away from her face. Margaret had never been a child to him, but she had always been a daughter and maybe that was what letting her go so hard.
The spectre turned away from him, and his smile dropped a fraction. She was leaving. “Stay safe, Mags.” He whispered, knowing she wouldn’t hear him over the din of well wishers gathered to see her and Garrus off, but he needed to say them. Needed the sense of finality it gave to everything.
The retired admiral watched her disappear into the skylimo. She was leaving. But she was happy. Just like he wanted. Slowly, he raised his hand in farewell, his fingers loose and slightly spread apart. he would snap to attention if he could, but the arthritis in his elbow made it harder.
Maybe just this one time.
Gritting his teeth, he tensed his hand and snapped his fingers up to his brow. The pain speared through his elbow into his shoulder, but he held the position until the skylimo pulled away. A slow tear fell from the corner of his eye and he let it fall. She’d be back, he promised himself. She’d be back soon.
Leave a ☱ in my askbox for an entry that’s about you.
I saw Mags today, she seemed happy which was great to see. During the war she seemed so cold and broken. I hope that she has a long and happy life, I don’t know what I’d do without her. I hope that Vakarian makes her happy, he seems to love her and I hope that things work out for them. I should stop by more often and check in on her. I find myself really missing her in my retirement.
Maggie smiled, gripping the Admiral’s hands, “No, thank you, Admiral. You’ve been there with me through everything and.. you’ve been like a father to me for so many years,” leaning up, she’d kiss his cheek, “I hope you’ll be a bigger part, too.”
The admiral smiled and squeezed her hands. “I will be there whenever you need me, Shepard. All you have to do is call.” He looked forward to the idea of being in her life more, seeing how the years rolled by. Maybe one day they’d look back and fondly remember all the things they had been through together.
Kiss number 1
Hackett pressed a soft kiss to the commander’s face, and pulled away. His eyes crinkled at the corners, as he smiled down at the newlywed. “Congratulations, Margaret. I’ve never been so happy, or so proud.”
